Once you’ve decided to build a custom home, it’s time to start developing your relationship with an architect to bring your vision to life. Working with an architect as early as possible is the safest route to a successful building project. You can start working with an architect at many phases throughout your decision-making process, even when searching for the right lot to build upon.
“Bring your architect on board as early as possible once you have decided you want to take on a building project," says David Schaub, principal of Schaub Projects Architecture + Design. "An architect has the training, knowledge, and vision it will take to plan your project to meet your needs and keep it within your budget."
Here are some of the times that clients generally start working with architects and what it means for the home-building process:
- Immediately After You’ve Decided to Build: In this instance, you're working with an architect from the first day of the home-building process, even before selecting a location for building the home. You’ll meet with the architects to share your goals, and they will then assist in making recommendations and next steps, including evaluating and assisting in the process of selecting a lot and moving on to the design of the home.
- After You’ve Purchased a Lot: Securing land is necessary before getting started on the design of the home. Designs should always be custom created to make the most of the homesite. For those who've already purchased a lot, the process of working with an architect starts with a site visit and research to determine the building codes and regulations. Then, the project moves onto the design of the home.
- Before You’ve Met with the Home Builders: If you haven’t found the right builder for your project, your architect can help. Architects typically have longstanding relationships with trusted builders. They can help match builders with their clients based on goals, project type, and level of difficulty. At that point, multiple builders can bid on your project, and your architect will assist you in selecting the best fit for the job.
- After You’ve Selected a Home Builder: If you’ve already selected a builder, then your architect can communicate with them early on in the process and coordinate with them as the designs and construction comes to life. If you’ve decided to build a custom home, now is the best time to get in touch with an architect.
