When J.T. McDermott Remodeling started on their most recent renovation, all involved knew it was a special project. As a second-generation, family-owned company, building and nurturing relationships with clients is what they pride themselves on. They understand relationships are the most important foundation of any company. With this renovation, that couldn’t be truer. The young family moving into this home knew exactly who to hire, as the wife’s parents had done their own renovation with McDermott Remodeling years prior. In addition, the husband’s mother was also familiar, and after receiving such detailed service and professionalism, recommended them as well. To be able to renovate the home of the second generation of this family, the importance is not lost on the owner, Josh McDermott, “It is a real honor to be asked back by family, and to be able to touch both of their homes.”
This connection and feeling persisted throughout the renovation. Everyone dreams of renovating their home with the perfect mixture of timeless and trendy. For this family, that included a kitchen renovation that stayed true to the original architectural style of the home, but with updates to reflect their personal taste. Their home is located in Holly Hills, a south St. Louis treasure rich in history, architecture and historic homes. While these homes are beautiful, their age can sometimes cause issues when going into a renovation.
The biggest challenges were due to the age of the house. For starters, the electric and plumbing were both 100 years old. With that came many surprises, resulting in a need to fish wires through a concrete porch the old kitchen had been built over and to reroute some plumbing. The next challenge was controlling the substantial amount of dust that comes with chiseling masonry and removing brick. To combat this issue, dust protection and plastic walls were required to protect the rest of the home throughout much of the renovation.
Once they overcame a few of these challenges, the transformation began. To give the homeowners the open floor plan they envisioned, they removed a masonry column and installed steel beams to increase the size of usable space by 30%, allowing for a beautiful island in the center of the room, perfect for gathering around and entertaining. Next, in keeping with the original feel of the house, the hardwood floors were sanded, stained and refinished to match the other floors in the home.
Putting their own spin on the design details was very important to the client. Brushed brass was the unique finish of choice. The dishwasher was relocated, opening up storage near the refrigerator. A small radiator was enclosed and turned into a drop station for the family. Quartz countertops were chosen to match the gorgeous, navy-blue island. Classic white subway tiles and a soft gray grout pulled the space together, resulting in a beautiful, personal and one of a kind design. After a few lighting installations, the kitchen was renovated and the clients were thrilled.
Trustworthy, accessible professionals in this business are priceless. A company that allows you to dream about, create and visualize your final project while offering qualified suggestions is worth your time and money. J.T. McDermott Remodeling values and respects relationships and their clients, and are with you every step of the way through the renovation process.
