The Missouri Department of Transportation issued a winter weather advisory yesterday, which urges Missourians to reduce travel late Thursday night through Sunday because of significant amounts of freezing rain, sleet, and ice. Many areas of the state are expected to get a half inch or more of ice.
"Motorists should avoid travel this weekend if at all possible," the statement says.
Since you likely won't be leaving the house in the next few days, we've compiled a quick list of activities to keep you busy.
Brush up on your St. Louis-centric movies/books/albums. Have you repeatedly been told to meet someone in "St. Louie" without fully appreciating the sentiment? Now's your chance to watch the famed 1944 musical Meet Me in St. Louis based on our beloved city, starring Judy Garland. Visit this list of other books and albums dedicated to St. Louis.
Try making the world's best gooey butter cake. Fill up those hours at home by baking (or attempting to bake) this delectable gooey butter cake recipe from Tony's pastry chef and SLM contributor Helen Fletcher. It's a bit more involved than your typical gooey butter recipe, but so worth it. And it yields 9 to 12 servings, so you'll be set for the entire icy weekend.
Complete this awesome St. Louis puzzle from Puzzle Warehouse. It's basically 500 pieces of the Arch and steamboats, and it's beautiful. The puzzle is a painting by folk artist Eric Dowdle, depicting a historic (hey, old Busch Stadium!) Fourth of July in St. Louis. There's no better way to keep your brain occupied this weekend.
Listen to some St. Louis-made jams. Every Thursday, SLM contributor Thomas Crone writes a roundup of all things local music. Watch a new music video from rock band American Wrestlers, and listen to new jams by Super Hero Killer, Mathias and the Pirates, and Centipede.
Plan your next interior design project. If you're stuck at home all weekend, chances are you'll have plenty of time to think of ways to change up your home décor. We recently asked an expert for tips on how to combine antique and modern elements in any room.
Read a good story. For our December issue, SLM staff writer Jeannette Cooperman dove deep into the life of Amanda Williamson, a St. Louis woman who survived her mother's mental illness and addictions. The longform story explores Amanda's tumultuous childhood and her present-day success.
Catch up on the best movies of 2016. SLM film critic Andrew Wyatt selected the best films from the past year. Although some movies listed are still in theaters, many are currently available on-demand or through streaming. You can find the hit animated flick Zootopia on Netflix, and Midnight Special and the Coen brothers' Hail, Caesar! are on HBO Go.
