Dare I say that it's not the song "Gloria" that you like, but rather the memories and feelings of the St. Louis Blues’ triumphs it brings to mind. Like a true St. Louisan, you tap your foot, bob your head, and sing along when Laura Branigan's ’80s banger starts to rattle a bar's speakers. You call out "Gloria" like she's your best friend. I don't make the rules. (The XFL Battlehawks earned an honorable mention with this bop. I give it a solid 6/10 for its beat and repetition.)
But today was a big day for St. Louis fans of another sport: The MLS ownership group announced St. Louis’ MLS soccer club name, colors, and crest. We are now the St. Louis City SC, shortened to "The City." Chances are you might have already purchased some gear. But something is missing, no?
What will we sing? What will we bellow to the other team's fans in our beautiful new stadium? What synth-pop anthem can we use to strike fear into our opponents' hearts? What will we call out to one another across the bar after each and every goal? Yeah, in some other city, an Imagine Dragons pop-rock hit would suffice—but not here.
I have a few thoughts.
We could play off of our nickname, “The City,” and continue our love for decades’-old tunes with “We Built This City,” by Starship.
Or we take our "City" moniker for a more modern approach, with "Rack City" by Tyga. (Clean version, though; this is a family sport.)
So far, these songs are about cities other than St. Louis. Is there anything more STL than Nelly's “Country Grammar”?
OK, maybe we take it back to our women vocalists, as with “Gloria.” Olivia Newton-John?
Hmm, perhaps not powerful enough. We need a superstar, and we need an anthem that we will know just from its beginning beats. We need...Cher.
But maybe Cher just isn't catchy enough? I raise you: Kylie Minogue's “Can't Get You Out of My Head.” The "la, la, la" will be a stadium favorite. Think of the victory dances players can do on the sidelines.
We clearly have a lot to think about. What would you want as The City's victory song? Let us know in the comments below.
