As St. Louisans debate what to name our forthcoming Major League Soccer team, here's a name they can begin chanting: BattleHawks.
On August 21, the XFL unveiled the team's name and colors in a live broadcast. St. Louis was awarded an XFL team in 2018, along with Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Seattle, Tampa Bay, and Washington, D.C.
"The BattleHawks will be the first modern professional football team born and raised in St. Louis," league commissioner Oliver Luck said.
Why the BattleHawks? The video explains: "Winged warriors. Preparing for flight. Preparing to fight. They await their orders. Then attack as one. Diving, dodging, swooping, striking. Their mission: create chaos. Their mandate: Win at all costs. The St. Louis BattleHawks."
Earlier this year, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that Luck "agreed to pay $100,000 in rent per game plus all concession cash to the St. Louis Convention & Visitors Commission, managers of the stadium now called the Dome at America’s Center."
The team is slated to take the field next February.
