Not only does St. Louis have the best fans in baseball, we also have the best-dressed team in baseball.
That’s according to ESPN’s exhaustive (if not exactly scientific) “Uni Watch” rankings, a list of the twenty cities with the best-dressed sports teams compiled by Paul Lukas, ESPN’s uniforms expert. Boston took the ranking’s No. 1 spot, and St. Louis rounds out the top half at No. 10.
The St. Louis Cardinals, which Lukas called “baseball’s best-looking team,” earned ESPN’s highest score (10 out of 10). The Rams scored low, 4.5 out of 10, despite having “the NFL’s best-looking helmet,” the study says. The Blues earned a respectable score of 6.5 out of 10 for having a “pretty-good-looking hockey team.”
St. Louis would have ranked much higher—at No. 6 above New York, Toronto, Detroit and Dallas—if it weren’t for the eyesore that is the Edward Jones Dome. ESPN took two points off of St. Louis’ score because of the Dome, apparently because it’s impossible to appreciate the Rams’ golden-spiraled helmets from inside a stadium nobody wants.
(If ESPN can take off two points for the Dome, we can take off two points because the study refers to our city as “St. Looey,” right?)
If you think a 4.5/10 score for the Rams’ jerseys is low, you’re not alone. From Nick Waggoner, who covers the Rams for ESPN:
Many, present company included, would argue that the Rams' uniform ranking would get a significant boost by going back to their roots. Their yellow and blue uniforms they wear for throwbacks are always a hit and would be a big step forward. But the old blue and whites going back even further would be a home run that might put the Rams in the top three or so in the league in terms of fashion.
Here’s the top ten ranking, via ESPN:
- Boston
- Pittsburgh
- Chicago
- Philadelphia
- San Francisco
- New York
- Toronto
- Detroit
- Dallas
- STL
