The St. Louis Cardinals officially announced today that free agent and former Chicago Cubs outfielder Dexter Fowler will join the team.
Fowler and the Cardinals have reportedly reached an agreement on a 5-year deal for $82 million. Fowler will wear the No. 25 jersey (last worn by Mark McGwire). One of Fowler's most memorable moments from this year's World Series—and one credited with helping the Cubs secure the championship—was his first-inning home run in Game 7.
Both Cardinals and Cubs fans took to social media to react to the news, as did both teams and Fowler himself.
The Cubs left a heartfelt message.
The Cardinals welcomed him at a press conference today. (Red really is his color.)
Understandably, Cubs fans were sad to see Fowler go.
Some were in denial.
But many wished him well in Cardinals Nation.
Meanwhile, Cardinals fans were ecstatic for the new player.
Unfortunately, these two fans were at an impasse.
Welcome to St. Louis, Dexter.
The Cardinals will face off against the Cubs for the 2017 season opener April 2.
