National Car Rental Field will be the name of St. Louis' new NFL stadium—if it's ever built, that is.
St. Louis’ proposed new stadium has a name: National Car Rental Field.
That means St. Louis’ riverfront stadium (if it’s ever built) will be named after one of the brands owned by the company that also runs Enterprise Rent-A-Car and Alamo Rent A Car. Enterprise Holdings signed a 20-year agreement to buy the stadium’s naming rights and agreed to pay $158 million over the next 20 years, or about $7.9 million per year.
But the name doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, St. Louisans noted:
First things first: Now that the stadium has a name, it’ll need an abbreviated nickname. After all, repeating “National Car Rental Field” every time you’re complaining about how much the project will cost taxpayers or predicting where the Rams will play in the future takes up too much time. Just so long as its nickname isn’t “The Rental.”
In true St. Louis fashion, locals wasted no time suggesting alternate names…
...but one proposed name stands out above the rest as a legitimate option: Enterprise Stadium, named for National Car Rental’s much more recognizable parent company, Enterprise Holdings, which is owned by one of St. Louis’ richest families, the Taylors.
Immediately after news about the stadium’s name broke, St. Louisans took to Twitter to suggest changing the name to “The Enterprise:”
If it were up to us, we’d name the proposed riverfront stadium Imo’s Field and build it in the shape of a square. But as one local Provel hater points out, maybe St. Louis could use that name somewhere else:
