Many startups use Kickstarter to raise seed money, but Greater Than Games, a local tabletop gaming company founded in 2011 just as crowd-funding was taking off, helped pioneer a slightly different approach. It makes presales of its board and card games through Kickstarter to gauge interest and raise money for production. That strategy has been a smashing success.
21: Games produced by the company, including a popular superhero card game called Sentinels of the Multiverse. “We’ve got a lot of games that really capture a particular feeling,” says operations director Paul Bender, “so people who want to feel like superheroes, you play this game and you feel like you’re in a comic book.”
$1,518,321: Amount raised in Greater Than Games’ most recent Kickstarter campaign to fund the OblivAeon expansion to Sentinels of the Multiverse. All-time, the company has raised more than $3.2 million through Kickstarter.
