If there's one thing that truckers and cops can agree on, it's apparently supporting a good cause—and setting world records (despite the headaches it may cause for other drivers).
Don't believe us? Head to St. Charles Family Arena tomorrow (Saturday, September 20) as the local leg of the World's Largest Truck Convoy (WTLC) sets out to maintain Guinness Book of World Record status in support of the Special Olympics of Missouri. The WTLC is an effort by law enforcement and truckers throughout the United States and Canada to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics by forming one incredibly long convoy.
"Special Olympics has a way of bringing everyone together, setting aside differences and building atmospheres of acceptance," says Susan Stegeman, Chief Development Officer for SOMO. "The fact that Special Olympics can bring together law enforcement and truckers is a testament to how the athletes of Special Olympics are a true inspiration."
The local convoy begins and ends at St. Charles Family Arena, as the highways are lined with an expected 150 trucks. In all, the international event will unite more than 2,000 truckers in 34 states and five Canadian provinces. The St. Louis leg is one of two in Missouri; another convoy takes place in Joplin.
