Going out for al fresco drinks with friends is one of my favorite things to do. But often, when the bill comes, I realize I’ve spent $50 to drink over-priced wine and talk to my two best friends, whom I see at least three times a week. I remind myself that I must seek out cheaper options if I want to avoid being penniless come September. That’s why events like Twilight Tuesdays at the History Museum’s front lawn (the corner of Lindell and DeBaliviere in Forest Park, 314-454-3199) are a sweet wallet relief.
Summertime in St. Louis is rife with free activities, but Twilight Tuesdays quite sensibly decide to take a sabbatical during the egg-frying-on-the-sidewalk months, so be mindful of the schedule. This Tuesday, it’s forecasted to be 77 degrees and sunny, a positively perfect temperature to gather your friends (and bottles of wine) and listen to U V Hayes & Roland Johnson. The duo will pay bluesy tribute to legendary St. Louis sax man Oliver Sain.
The show starts at 6 p.m., but seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Leave it till the last minute and you’ll spend the first half hour frog-hopping over coolers and blankets dodging curious ankle-sniffing dogs. So give yourself ample time to get there. (Also be sure yourself a few minutes to plan what you’ll need for the evening. Throwing your goodie basket together in haste begs for error. A wine bottle with no corkscrew can be very unfortunate.)
Upcoming shows include Griffin and the Gargoyles (May 29), Asia Lynn Bargé—The Diana Ross Experience (June 5), and Wendell Brown’s Tribute to Luther Vandross (June12).
Note: In the event of bad weather, the show will be rescheduled. To find out if a show has been cancelled day-of, call the Twilight Tuesdays Information Hotline after 3 p.m. at 800-916-8212 or listen to the Clear Channel stations for details.
