With the January 2, 2011 smoking ban, the St. Louis bar scene will change noticeably. For some St. Louisans, the impending ban is nothing short of a Christmas miracle; for others, it’s a cruel lump of coal.
Instating the ban in the dead of winter can seem a bit vicious with smokers being forced outside in the razor-sharp winter winds—or worse. Casinos and dive bars will stay open due to the “incidental food sales” clause, which exempts establishments with food sales less than 20 percent of total sales.
But there is a classy joint where one can enjoy a smoke without being banished to the cold or a den of ill repute.
With its stellar scotch, wine, and cigar selections, Brennan’s already maintains a steady stream of hip and discerning clientele. At least one of the establishment’s three levels appeals to nearly everyone.
The somewhat newly rehabbed, smoke-free ground level is both sleek and rustic and tongue-in-cheek with clocks on the wall showing the local times in Warrenton, Farmington, and Herculaneum, Mo. The wall above the bar sports an immense blackboard with a cheeky message to patrons that is changed weekly.
The upper level, known as the Maryland House, is roomier with space for bands or a DJ and a lounge area that attracts a younger, chain-smoking crowd.
Down below is where the place gets really interesting—a dark, sultry cellar lounge with a Tuscan-wine-cellar-cum-Medieval-prison feel. This is currently the place for hardcore smokers; with low-ceilings, this level gets super smoky. You don’t even need to light up down there to get a buzz.
Now, one would think that bars with low food sales would unscrupulously capitalize on their ban-exempt status. But, while Brennans could allow itself to be turned into a veritable ashtray, the owner is actually doing the opposite—the lower level will become non-smoking.
All cigar and cigarette smoking with be relegated to the upper level, which will be refurbished with a designated cigar smoking area. The ground and lower levels will be fresh air and food friendly.
And speaking of food, Brennan’s offers a limited menu of small plates, like delectable cheese platters, that really are worth a try—and perfect for a pre- or post-dinner nibble.
