James S. McDonnell Planetarium is launching a 21-and-up concert series that will feature a blast from the past, the LASERIUM laser light shows.
The Saint Louis Science Center's Nova Nights Cosmic Concert Series premieres this Saturday, with doors opening at 7 p.m.
The idea behind the event is to provide a nightlife alternative for adults, "a place that would be more around social, versus just coming in with your kids," says Cynthia Skaggs, managing director of marketing and communications.
After the planetarium stopped hosting LASERIUM shows 15 years ago, the Science Center brought back its popular laser shows earlier this year, coinciding with the Forest Park landmark's 50th anniversary. Given the response, the shows will continue next year.
So what's the twist for Nova Nights? Live music (not to mention the drinks and dessert station). Party band The Hulapoppers will perform as laserist Brian Wirthlin of Photon Alchemy orchestrates the lights.
"This will be the first time we will have tried to do this over a live band," says planetarium director John Lakey. "I think it will be real cool."
