Usually when there is birthday celebration, beer merely serves as a perpetuator of merriment, the faithful supporting actor to the birthday girl or boy.
But today marks the beginning of a long-weekend-long celebration, and a certain beer is the birthday boy: Schlafly is turning 20!
While Schlafly technically isn't of U.S. drinking age, his birthday celebration will be boozy. Starting today and running through Monday December 26th (with the exception of Christmas Day), Schlafly Beer is hosting its 20th anniversary celebration at The Schlafly Tap Room (2100 Locust, 314-241-2337). As if that wasn't as awesome as Christmas morning, Schlafly will be reverting to prices from 1991, back when it was founded by Tom Schlafly and Dan Kopman. Special beer pricing will be available at the Tap Room only, so don't harrass the folks at Bottleworks or Schnucks demanding heavily discounted brews.
Another nice touch to this birthday-vaganza are the concerts showcasing local musicians that have played at the Tap Room over the last 20 years. Tonight at 8 p.m, TOK, Magic City, Spelling Bee, and Half Gay will perform. Friday's concert will run from 8 p.m. till midnight and features The Flying Mules, The Orbits, and Fairchild. On Monday, Dec. 26, check out the Lucky Dog Band, performing from 6 p.m. until 9:30 p.m.
Be sure to try the limited-edition anniversary ale, No. 20 volume 4: Southern Hemisphere IPA, a kettle-hopped and dry-hopped ale using a Tasmanian hop called Galaxy, which is available on draft and in 750-ml bottles. The perfect last-minute holiday gift by chance?
