Neon Memes • The White Album. Quadrophenia. Tusk. Before the 45 resurrected itself as the MP3 and incompetence and greed doomed the music industry as such, rock 'n' roll periodically treated fans to double albums showcasing a loony level of energy, diversity and even grandeur. Local indie Scat Records just released such a double from St. Louis quartet Prisonshake―Douglas Enkler (vocals), Robert Griffin (guitar, keyboards, vocals), Patrick Hawley (percussion) and Steve Scariano (bass). I bought the double, Dirty Moons, late last week from Euclid Records (601 E. Lockwood, 314.961.8978) for an unthinkably low $12.99 plus tax and spun it throughout the long Labor Day weekend. Dirty Moons opens with a trio of exceedingly memorable tunes: "Fake Your Own Death," an opener itself featuring a too-cool-for-school opening; "I Will Comment," a high-octane aural assault; and "The Cut-Out Bin," an exercise in snarky hilarity. Two discs and a total of 22 tracks later, everything ends (pardon a pun) smashingly with "It Was a Very Good Year." Rude, raucous―and heartily recommended. ―Bryan A. Hollerbach, Managing Editor
