When the Peabody Opera House reopened to show off her splendid renovations after years of being shuttered, I had a vision of a night of elegance and culture at the opera. My fiancé—looking dashing in a bespoke suit would take my gloved hand and escort me to our seats. We would sit in the dazzling hall taking in the exquisite aria being performed before us. I'd look over and swear I could almost see a tear in his eye because the experience was just that moving. And right before I get to the coda in this fantasy of mine, when—as if moved by the holy spirit—I spring to my feet in a standing ovation applauding the brilliant evening that transported me to another era I would remember: My fiancé would sooner lose a finger than take me to the opera.
Luckily for me, the Peabody houses performances other than those of the operatic variety. Like tonight, when sweaty, stuttering comedian Lewis Black takes the stage. His permanently dour expression, crotchety demeanor, and profanity-riddled, bile-coated rants are more my man's speed. The show starts at 8 p.m. and according to Ticketmaster, there are still decent seats available.
And if you're not a last-minute type of person and require more than the few hours of heads up I'm giving you for Lewis Black, then accept this as an apology gift of sorts: Daniel Tosh (Tosh.0) is coming to the Peabody in April 21. That should give you plenty of time to plan.
Lewis Black: In God We Rust will take place at 8 p.m. tonight at the Peabody Opera House (1400 Market, 800-745-300). Tickets are from $36.50 to $72.
