The Green Hornet flew to No. 1 in movie theaters this past weekend. I'll certainly be checking it out because I think I might be a relative of the famous crime fighter.
I've always enjoyed reading trivia books. Long before the present plethora of trivia contests and years before the creation of the board game Trivia Pursuit, I would spend hours reading the latest trivia encyclopedia, The Book of Lists or other literature that centered on facts of semi-importance.
When I was 12 I stumbled upon this information. It was stunning:
A Texas Ranger set out to arrest the outlaw Butch Cavendish, but he was double-crossed by some of his own men and rode into an ambush. Left for dead, this ranger decided to continue fighting crime but had no trust in the law. He became the Lone Ranger.
The Lone Ranger's son would grow up to be a newspaper publisher. He battled the bad guys with his news coverage and editorials before he passed his newspaper dynasty to his son. The son took the helm of the newspaper, but ran into corruption in high offices including with law authorities, so he decided to don a mask like his grandfather and fight crime under a secret identity.
The Lone Ranger's name was Robert Reid. His partner was Tonto, a Native American.
The Green Hornet's dad was named Robert Reid. The Green Hornet's name is Britt Reid. His partner was Kato, an Asian-American.
Both MY grandfather and father were named Robert Reid.
Of course, my name is Alvin, not Britt, but you get the point.
See you at the theater.
