The anticipation is over: The iconic World's Largest Catsup Bottle in Collinsville, Ill., will get a fresh coat of paint starting today. The Catsup Bottle Preservation Group, created by Judy DeMoisy in 1993, raised funds for the improvements, and Rod Reinneck—the same guy who handled the restoration back in 1995 (the last time it was painted)—will do the painting again. But this news got us to thinking: What other local landmarks could use a face lift?
1) The Bottle District's Vess Bottle
Perhaps flashing those neon lights could help jump-start business in the much-hyped, yet-to-be-developed district.
2) Cherokee Street's Indian Statue
It's so faded by now, the chief might as well have a tear rolling down his face.
3) Skyview Drive-In's Sign
Some nostalgia is appropriate, but the drive-in could at least fire up its rocket-themed logo to compete with state-of-the-art theaters like Great Escape at Gravois Bluffs.
4) AB's Eagle Sign
Several years ago, KMOX listener Jeff Mild notified AB that the eagle was flying backward. After an investigation, the company found a short circuit caused the problem and quickly resolved it. But since InBev's purchase last December, perhaps reversing its flight again would make sense.
5) Giant Amoco Sign
It's a BP, for crying out loud!
