Neon Memes • One of the sharpest, most acclaimed creators in indie comic books today, St. Louisan Kevin Huizenga recently launched a new series through Oakland, Ca.'s Buenaventura Press. I asked Huizenga (who also regularly publishes through Drawn & Quarterly and Fantagraphics Books) for a précis of that whimsical 32-page black-and-white title, Fight or Run: Shadow of the Chopper, which appeared just last week in finer comics shops everywhere. He graciously responded: "It's a straightforward comics game wherein two characters meet, fight or run. Whoever survives or escapes the conflict is named the winner and presented with a flag or trophy. Endless variations are possible. There is no patent on this game! It's like running a race or a spitting contest. Whoever invented thumb wrestling brought forth a new thing and presented it to the children of tomorrow; this is like that. For me, the idea was to not have to plan something, to not be violent but decorative and to not complicate the setup. This first issue is rough and inconsistent; I drew these comics here and there over the last few years in between other projects.... The next issue is tentatively named Fight or Run: Mask of McSkulls." ―Bryan A. Hollerbach, Managing Editor
