Earlier this year, the blog "What Should We Call Me" (WSWCM) was created on Tumblr and became an instant and huge success. The beauty of WSWCM is its relatability––each post consists of a title describing a common experience followed by a humorous GIF. With the popularity of WSWCM, it was only a matter of time before copycat blogs started popping up. That's where "What High School Should We Call Me" comes in. The local site, which has gotten 65,000 unique visitors and 630,000 pageviews total, has become extremely popular for its humorous observations on life in St. Louis, from high school stereotypes to traffic on Washington Avenue.
I spoke with the creators of the site, who prefer to remain anonymous, via e-mail.
I know that you want to maintain your anonymity, but if you could give me any demographic info (age, gender, city or county, public or private, etc.), that'd be great.
Two girls. One blog. To answer the rest of your questions:
What made you decide to use the "What Should We Call Me" format with St. Louis stereotypes?
We noticed cities like L.A., Chicago and New York had their own WSWCM-style GIF Tumblrs, and who's anyone to say St. Louis isn't just as cool? (Besides their entire populations, plus most of ours.)
You gotta give the people what they want.
I know my friends are posting your GIFs all over Facebook. Have you spotted any of your friends who don't know you're behind the blog doing the same? If so, what's that like?
It's hilarious. The guy one of us is dating recently sent a link to a post and literally said, "You're welcome." I was like, uhh, no, you're welcome.
Why do you think staying anonymous is important?
First of all, it's way funnier this way because we love seeing our friends post links/send them to us/talk about the blog to our faces. But more importantly it helps us keep the blog well-rounded. We've posted some submissions and have gotten inspiration from several friends, so it would be lame if everyone knew it was just two chicks from ____ ragging on everyone. Being anonymous makes it more of a collective effort.
Additionally:
I know Schlafly tweeted one of your posts, any other businesses responded to you?
A few. Nick's Pub has posted links. And we'd ideally like to work out some sort of beer-for-GIF deal with them. (So Nick's, if you're listening, give us a shout.)
You seem pretty down with night life here. What's your perfect bar crawl run-down?
We'd start at a Cards game where someone else would pay for our $8 beers. Then we'd shuttle it down to Soulard, crawl around there for a while (lingering on the patios) until we secure a rando to drive us downtown. Five minutes at the Dubliner followed by Hair of the Dog for an hour. From there we'd head west and run into every single person we went to high school with in the CWE, then see those same exact people (but wearing boat shoes this time), plus all the cougars, out in Clayton. At 1 a.m. we're obviously off to Nick's. After three Bud Lights our destiny is clear, and that destiny is Talayna's. Several regrets later we find ourselves at City Diner, each either missing a shoe or a purse but enjoying a delicious slinger. And from there, well, a lady never tells.
Favorite parish fish fry?
We don't discriminate.
Favorite food truck?
