When it comes to drinking during the work week, the Brits have got it right: head to the pub immediately after work and be on your way home by 11, when pubs close. You’re guaranteed at least seven hours and can tackle your day somewhat refreshed and composed.
As such, I am a fan of the happy hour: in at 5, out by 7, in jammies by 10.
But finding a decent happy hour at a reputable place can be challenging. Nicer establishments may have wimpy drinks, and high food prices can ratchet up the tab if you get peckish.
Frazer’s, a swanky yet charming restaurant/bar in Benton Park, offers specials throughout the week . But be sure to visit this little gem on Tuesday between 4 and 6 p.m., when they have a free appetizer buffet.
The phrase “free bar food” usually stinks of stale chips, a pawed-over bowl of nuts, and, if you’re really lucky, wiener bites. But Frazer’s offers food so legit, you can cheekily make a nice dinner out of it.
While the buffet changes slightly from week to week, you can count on olives, hummus, and pita. Other items that have graced Frazer’s buffet are chicken wings, empañadas, grilled eggplant, ricotta rolls, and ribs.
The food is replenished often, so don’t worry about not getting enough to eat. The ribs, however, go very quickly so you have to be on your A-game, toss civility to the wind, and get some the instant they’re set on the table. Don't be afraid to throw some elbows.
Make friends with the Tuesday night bartender, Tammy, who is sassy and charismatic and will take good care of you.
