For St. Louisans, the Gateway Arch is the icon of the place we call home, the gleaming landmark that welcomes travelers to the West and makes it impossible not to look up every time we're downtown. But for most Americans, not so impressive. According to the results of a 60 Minutes/Vanity Fair poll published in the October issue of Vanity Fair, the Gateway Arch is what 46 percent of the more than 1,000 adults nationwide said was the least impressive national monument.
The Arch handily beat out several other contenders for least impressive, including The Alamo (31 percent), Mount Rushmore (6 percent), the Grand Canyon (6 percent), and Niagara Falls (3 percent).
Other results for the under-appreciated include gym class as the least essential subject in school, carpenter as Jesus' least likely profession if he were alive today, and trick-or-treating as the least important tradition.
What do you think contributes to the lost love for the Gateway Arch? Not enough visibility? Don't understand it till you see it? Or do you think the Arch isn't that impressive anymore? Tell us in the comments.
