Students in all grades at MICDS enjoy access to three campus makerspaces. These uniquely equipped workshops enable students to explore ideas through making, tinkering, and experimental play. Maker projects are far-reaching in the Upper School with Sphero chariots and fire extinguishers in science, 3D-printed prosthetic hands in kinesiology, and roller coasters in physics.
Crossing divisions and subject matter, Middle School students create 3D printed, embroidered, and laser-cut objects, and Lower School students design and craft board games for their U.S. Regions unit in Social Studies.
Designs, prototypes, and builds for problem-solving can begin with inspiration or emerge from learning about materials and techniques through a guided project. Each makerspace boasts tools such as 3D printers, wood saws, sewing machines, and soldering irons that help bring student and faculty ideas to life, creating a culture of learning and innovation for real-world problems where the only limit is the imagination.
