EXCEPTIONAL EDUCATION. BOLD EXPECTATIONS. COMMUNITY TRANSFORMATION.
City Academy was founded in 1999 by Don Danforth upon the belief that a family’s geographic location and income should never be a barrier to accessing high-quality education. The school remains the only private, independent elementary school in St. Louis that provides 100 percent of its students with scholarship support, totaling more than $4.6 million in 2022.
Located in North St. Louis City, families from more than 40 different ZIP codes send their children ages 3 through sixth grade to City Academy’s beautiful campus for its innovative approach to education that includes STEAM curriculum, violin instruction (first through sixth grade), Spanish instruction (all grades), and small class sizes (7:1 student-to-teacher ratio). Nearly 75 percent of students come from under-resourced or unaccredited school districts, and 57 percent come from families with a household income of $50,000 or less.
The school provides rigorous preparation for sixth graders to gain admittance to the best independent secondary schools in St. Louis (with an 88 percent acceptance rate) and supports alumni on their path toward college.
