The war was over, and the battle-weary troops were coming home eager for simple American pleasures—like baseball. The Cardinals won their sixth World Series at Sportsman's Park that year, defeating the then-cursed Boston Red Sox. Headquartered in St. Louis, the Sporting News captured the action firsthand. Later that fall, the Sporting News moved its offices from 10th and Olive to the seventh floor of the Garrison-Wagner Building (pictured) at 2018 Washington. At the time, the single-copy price of the national sports weekly was 20 cents; the yearly subscription rate was $8.
