Think of all the time and money you spend driving to work, sitting, waiting in traffic, guzzling gas, and emitting potentially harmful fumes into the atmosphere. Starting this September, Trailnet is issuing a bike-commute challenge to encourage cyclists to pedal to work.
Individuals and teams will be encouraged to log their bike commute miles on shiftyourcommute.com, where cyclists can be part of weekly prize drawings and compete against hundreds of individuals and workplaces across St. Louis. At the end of the month, Trailnet will present a prize to the workplace team with the highest commute rate.
In addition to environmental benefits, Trailnet also notes that there are numerous benefits to your physical health when you commute to work by bike: The average person loses 13 pounds their first year of commuting by bike, just three hours of bicycling per week can reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke by 50 percent, and a 140-pound cyclist burns 508 calories while pedaling 14 miles in an hour.
Don't live close enough to work to ride your bike? Try combining rides on the MetroBus or MetroLink with your cycling or walking.
