For many patients with tumors, treatment consists of painful, invasive surgeries that can keep them in the hospital for weeks. Today, St. Louis CyberKnife, a noninvasive alternative to surgery used to treat tumors and other medical conditions, opened at SSM St. Clare Health Center in Fenton.
A $6 million joint venture between SSM Cancer Care, a group of local physicians, and US Radiosurgery, CyberKnife is used by radiation oncologists to treat cancerous and noncancerous tumors throughout the body noninvasively using high-dose radiation delivered in five or fewer outpatient procedures.
The CyberKnife can treat tumors from virtually unlimited directions, making it possible to treat difficult-to-reach tumors that may have been considered inoperable in the past. Some conditions that can be treated by CyberKnife include brain, kidney, liver, lung, and spinal tumors; pancreatic and prostate cancers; and more.
