Later this week, SLU announced that it will be starting construction on one of the region's first outpatient bone marrow transplant centers, which is estimated to open in October.
The $3-million center, which will be located within the hospital's cancer center, is designed to provide patients with the option to receive their bone marrow transplants in an outpatient setting.
Dr. Friedrich Schuening, director of the Division of Hematology and Oncology at SLU's Cancer Center, is leading the facility, with St. Louis-based Fox Architects, the architectural firm on the project, and McGrath & Associates, the contractor.
Bone marrow transplants usually occur after chemotheraphy, certain cancers such as leukemia, or a disease that affects the production of bone marrow cells such as sickle cell anemia. The procedure replaces damaged or destroyed bone marrow with healthy bone marrow stem cells.
