In today’s world where eating pre-packaged meals and fast food on the go seem to be the norm, I think back on simpler times when home-cooked meals, family gatherings around the table minus technology, and wholesome conversations regarding health and life were shared. Gone are the days when fresh fruits and vegetables were always home-grown or purchased from farmers off the back of their trucks. I believe there’s something to be said about the generations of old and their values that speak to raising health conscious children today.
In today's technological age, education regarding health prevention and healthy eating habits abound. We are no longer limited by our lack of knowledge. As parents and caregivers, I believe teaching and instilling prevention to our children is important. It teaches our children how to be proactive concerning their health and well-being. Today we have some of the latest technologies and advancements in health care. Our knowledge should be shared amongst our children, in addition to discussing family genetics and health factors that could potentially affect them as they progress into adulthood. The following tips may prove useful in helping you raise health conscious kids:
1. Share activities as a family. Incorporating adventure and fun into activities can promote a healthy lifestyle and deter feelings of aversion to exercise.
2. Get kids interested in sports. Not only do sports enhance physical fitness, it is also a great way to help kids develop needed social skills.
3. Educate kids about the foods they eat and how certain foods promote immunity, and provide kids with healthy food choices.
4. Be flexible regarding food choices. Being rigid can lead to a battle of wills and discouraged kids from trying new things.
5. Get yearly physicals and explain to your child the benefits of physicals, immunizations, and keeping a healthy weight
Remember raising a health -onscious child starts with you. Children practice what they are taught or have learned from watching others. For more information on raising health conscious kids and parenting, visit the following websites:
