It’s that time of year. You know, the time of year when New Year’s resolutions that were made with the best of intentions start losing steam and threaten to come to a sputtering, inglorious halt. The gym looks a little (okay, a lot) less alluring. Motivation is hovering somewhere between minimal and non-existent. And your diet is on the fritz. (French fries are a vegetable, right?) Yes, making a New Year’s resolution is like buying your child a drum set for Christmas. Fun at first. Later on… not so much.
But, as the saying goes, don’t throw the kid out with the drums. Even if you’ve slipped a bit in your resolve, you can still reclaim your health goals—and it doesn’t have to be hard. Personal trainer and nutrition expert Tim Detmer of Finish It Fitness in Chesterfield (14382 S. Outer 40, 314-576-3800) has shared five super foods that are packed with specific nutrients to help you achieve resolution success, whether your objective is to lose weight, gain fitness, feel more energized, or simply take better care of your body. (As for the drum set, you’re on your own.)
Salmon
High in protein and omega-3 fatty acids, salmon not only improves metabolism, aids in cardiovascular health, and lowers blood pressure, but it also acts as a natural anti-inflammatory, giving you that “thin” feeling. In addition, salmon improves skin texture and adds shine to your eyes, skin, hair, and nails.
Quinoa
Packed with amino acids as well as key nutrients such as zinc, vitamin E, and selenium, this ancient grain is a powerful weapon in the battle of the bulge. “Quinoa is a great source of incredibly complex carbohydrates,” says Detmer. “It satisfies your need for a starch, but it still has the protein so you don’t have cravings later.”
Greek Yogurt
Not only is Greek yogurt high in protein, but it is chock-full of probiotics, which aid in digestion and regularity. By promoting the efficient disposal of energy-sapping waste and toxins, Greek yogurt “keeps the body free and flowing,” says Detmer.
Low-Fat Cottage Cheese
A power snack if there ever was one, low-fat cottage cheese wields both calcium and protein to fight cravings, balance blood sugar levels, and aid fat loss. If you’re turned off by the texture, Detmer suggests mixing equal parts natural salsa and cottage cheese to make a delicious dip.
Cocoa-Dusted Almonds
Simply brilliant. These cocoa-dusted delights satisfy your chocolate craving while giving you all the benefits of almonds—protein, heart-healthy fats, fiber, and antioxidants. Sugar crash and post-candy guilt not included.
