Spring has sprung—shed the coats, and get moving. St. Louis has plenty of places and activities for families to get active. Here are just five options to add to your weekend plans.
1) Meramec Greenway: If you’re teaching your kids to ride their bikes, Anne Milford of Great Rivers Greenway suggests Meramec Greenway. This 3.6-mile route starts in Kirkwood's Greentree Park and winds to Arnold’s Grove along the Meramec River. It’s flat, has lots of shade, and offers plenty of places along the way that are perfect for a family picnic.
2) Laumeier Sculpture Park: The size and scale of some of these pieces are sure to amaze little ones. Interactive and engaging, these pieces will inspire and you’ll enjoy an afternoon outdoors Don't miss the tucked-away Art Hike Trail, where kids can explore such sculptures as Jackie Ferrara's "Laumeier Project."
3) Katy Trail: The renowned rails-to-trails park offers some of the state's most scenic views, particularly along the Missouri River, near Augusta and Defiance. Don't feel like loading up the bikes? Consider renting one. The Defiance shop offers bike rentals for $5 per hour or $25 per day, and the new Augusta bike shop opens for the season this Saturday.
4) Creve Coeur Park: Walk, run, bike, paddle, sail… There are so many ways to enjoy the park. One other possibility: See it from the treetops via the Go Ape! Zip Line & Treetop Adventure.
5) Forest Park: With the weather warming up, the gem of the city is as popular as ever, especially on weekends. A word of advice: Go early. It's easier to find parking, and the first hour is free at the Saint Louis Zoo's Stringrays at Caribbean Cove, Conservation Carousel, and the Children's Zoo.
