When Vietnam veteran Harold Hogarth learned that children who lose a parent in war are much less likely than their peers to attend or graduate from college, he wanted to do something. “The kids get forgotten,” he says. So this summer, he founded Gold Star College for Kids (goldstarcollegeforkids.org). The nonprofit is just beginning to raise money, but Hogarth plans to partner with community organizations to provide counseling and tutoring to young children as they work through school. Gold Star kids will then receive college scholarships. He already has one family in mind: three siblings who lost Dad in Afghanistan and Mom in a car accident. “These stories are terrible,” Hogarth says, “and somebody has got to help them.”
