Katy Perry put on a memorable, family-friendly halftime show during last weekend’s Super Bowl. But this weekend’s Grammy award show might be a different story. We picked the nominees who are safe to watch at home. Throw your own Grammy party, fire up the YouTube, and get the dance party started!
Best Song Written for Visual Media: Frozen's "Let it Go"
There should be a category for most played song in cars, homes, and playrooms. But “Let it Go” is nominated for best song written for visual media. Here’s our favorite version: a beautiful young ice queen who dons an amazing braid and sings with an African tribal choir as a little prince runs around in her magical ice palace.
Record of the Year and Song of the Year: Taylor Swift's "Shake it Off"
If you can’t just let the hard days go, then shake them off like Taylor Swift. Her hit is infectious, earning a nomination for record of the year and song of the year. Shorts might be a little short in one of the dance scenes, but otherwise it’s a get up and dance video for all ages.
Best Pop Solo Performance: Pharrell Williams's "Happy"
It’s hard to believe Pharrell is 41, because he looks like a teenager dancing to one of the happiest beats we heard last year. It doesn’t matter how you groove when you watch this one—everyone is a star.
Best Pop Vocal Album: Katy Perry's Prism
One of our favorite videos from Prism is for “Roar.” You can take the opportunity to explain to older kids how they can respond when someone tries to hold them back in life and compare it to Katy Perry acting out the role of a tiger, one of the most powerful animals in the wild.
Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop Solo Performance, Best Music Video: Sia's "Chandelier"
It’s one of the most-watched videos on YouTube. Sia will be performing at the Grammy’s, and based on previous live performances of “Chandelier” with 12-year-old Maddie Ziegler and her amazing interpretive dance, it could be okay for your littlest ones to watch.
Best Children's Album: The Okee Dokee Brothers' Through the Woods
It’s not a popular song, but watch the video and you will see why these brothers are nominated for best children’s album. It shows them exploring the woods through the Appalachian Trail, traveling through the river banks, seeing waterfalls, and strumming the guitar and banjo in the middle of it all.
Best Musical Theatre Album: Aladdin
And now to the animated must-watch list. It’s been 23 years since the animated movie Aladdin came out in theaters, so it’s probably not getting a ton of airplay in your home. But the songs are classics, and with a new musical on Broadway, it’s no wonder it’s among the nominees for best musical theatre album.
Best Song Written for Visual Media: The Lego Movie's "Everything is Awesome!!!"
Twins Tegan and Sara are great with The Lonely Island for this title song from The LEGO Movie.
