For St. Louis County residents, time spent driving to St. Louis Children’s Hospital (1 Children’s, 314-454-6000, stlouischildrens.org) will be cut considerably by early summer 2015. That’s when the hospital plans to open its new outpatient pediatric ambulatory center in the old Missouri Highway Patrol Troop C headquarters at 599 S. Mason.
Rick Majzun, vice president of the hospital and overseer of the outpatient clinic, says BJC bought the land with no specific purpose in mind. Upon reflection, “we thought this would be a wonderful outpost for Children’s Hospital,” he says. “We surveyed the moms and we found that while moms all love Children’s, they don’t love to drive down to where we are.”
The two-story, 140,999-square-foot building, set on 15.8 acres, is being created under the aegis of Cannon Design. The outpost will house offices for Washington University physicians in just about every pediatric specialty possible, apart from neurosurgery. The building will also include full imaging capability; physical, speech, and psychological therapy; and three operating rooms, with the option to add a fourth later.
“It will be very comprehensive,” Majzun says. “There’s nothing like it in the area.”
But for the child who falls out of the tree and breaks his arm, Majzun says St. Louis County residents should still head for the Children’s Hospital pediatric wing at Missouri Baptist Medical Center, which covers urgent and inpatient care for such predicaments.
