The Hard Bob Messengers capture the impromptu with style, work it, and savor it til it's over.
The Hard Bop Messengers’ Matt Krieg and John Covelli conceived of this show on a road trip. Regarding the storied band, Krieg says “the precision of their musical thoughts drove their endless pursuit of perfection.” “Lyrically,” Covelli says, “under the radar of the perfect world, there is the story of something broken”.
These cohabitating complexities inspired Matt and John to bring this music to new life within the Hard Bop Messengers environment.
Selecting the songs for the program, while facing a robust catalog of material to choose from, was no easy task. However, given the similar challenge of forming their “Jazz Interpretations of The Grateful Dead” show, the band knows they can’t play ‘em all.”
“Given the fact that Steely Dan stopped touring to focus on studio recordings, I’d always tried to imagine what a loose set of stretching out might sound like during their prime 1970’s dynasty," Covelli says, citing their first decade as a band, rather than their ‘90’s era and later.
