An afternoon of British Folk Horror Film
to
Arkadin Cinema & Bar 5228 Gravois, St Louis, Missouri 63116
“Unlike tales of bodysnatching aliens or hellraising demons, the charm of folk horror is that it sidles up to the almost believable. Our suspension of disbelief is extended further than usual with historic settings, real locations and the universal terror of isolation and uncontrolled nature. Well-written folk horror bridges the gap between myth and modernity with eerie familiarity: It could, or did, happen here.” -Liz Braswell, “Science Fiction & Fantasy: Folk Horror’s Subtle Chills”
Eerie Pagan rituals. Villages lost to time. Dark woodlands and misty moors. These are the substance of British Folk Horror. To get in the Samhain spirit, Arkadin is presenting a curated selection of the creepiest, most mind-bending examples of this unusual and underseen genre. While Robin Hardy’s classic The Wicker Man and Alex Garland’s recent A24 effort Men are perhaps the best-known entries in the genre, we’ll be bringing you some deeper cuts from the British Isles — little-seen and rarely screened short- and mid-length spookers that are guaranteed to leave you chilled to the bone.
Full program will last about 150 minutes.
