St. Louis Magazine won top honors in five categories—including Magazine of the Year—of the 2013 Great Plains Journalism Awards. The winners were announced at the Tulsa Press Club’s conference on May 17 at The Mayo Hotel in Tulsa, Okla. One of the most prestigious journalism competitions in mid-America, the Great Plains Journalism Awards drew more than 800 entries from an eight-state region.
St. Louis Magazine received the esteemed title of 2013 Great Plains Magazine of the Year. St. Louis Magazine staff writer Jeannette Cooperman won in the category of Magazine News Writing for her April 2012 article “Chasing the Dragon,” about St. Louis’ growing heroin epidemic. St. Louis Magazine senior editor William Powell—who joined the St. Louis Magazine editorial staff in September 2012—received top honors in the category of Magazine Feature Writing for his December 2012 article “Remember Times Beach: The Dioxin Disaster, 30 Years Later.”
Ray Hartmann, St. Louis Magazine’s columnist and co-owner, won in the category of Magazine Column Writing for his monthly column “Think Again.” St. Louis Magazine art director Lindsay Hotz Timme also earned top honors in the category of Magazine Page Design.
All entries were judged by a blue-ribbon panel of esteemed journalists, including Alec Klein, a former Washington Post reporter and best-selling author and professor who is director of the Medill Justice Project; Tim Rasmussen, assistant managing editor for photography and multimedia at The Denver Post and a 2012 and 2010 Pulitzer Prize winner; and Ben Montgomery, an enterprise reporter for the Tampa Bay Times, founder of the narrative-journalism website Gangrey.com, and a recent Pulitzer Prize finalist. The eight-state competition is open to newspapers and magazines in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa, North Dakota, and South Dakota.
