ST. LOUIS, MO – October 23, 2008 – St. Louis Magazine’s AT HOME is pleased to announce the winners of the first annual AT HOME Architect and Design Awards. At a reception Thursday night, October 23, AT HOME editor-in-chief Christy Marshall and St. Louis Magazine editor-in-chief Stephen Schenkenberg presented awards in 19 categories to the 31 local companies who placed in the contest. Some of the year’s big winners include Susan Bower and Stephen Leet, who won three first place awards in three separate categories - all for the same project, a remodel of the Stinson House. Bower and Leet won first place for Historic Residential Renovation, Remodel (Less Than 1,000 Square Feet) and Best Contemporary Design. In addition, the local architectural firm, Tao + Lee, won two first place awards for Remodel (Greater Than 1,000 Square Feet) and Best Residential Swimming Pool. Tao + Lee also won second place for Remodel (Less Than 1,000 Square Feet). George W. Johannes won first place for the Best Residential Architecture (More Than 4,000 Square Feet). Johannes’ first place award-winning architectural design project is also featured on the cover of the November/December issue of AT HOME. brooksBerry & Associates won a total of six awards, sweeping the category of Best Interior Design of a Powder Room and winning second place for Best Interior Design of a Kitchen, Best Interior Design of a Master Suite, and Best Contemporary Design. Additional highlights of big winners include CLB Interiors, who won first places for Best Interior Design of a Kitchen and Best Interior Design of a Master Suite. Jamieson Designs won first place for Best Traditional Interior Design and Marc Christian Fine Cabinetry received a total of four awards, including first place for Best Interior Design of a Bath. Moynihan & Associates won both first and second place for Best Residential Landscape Design Construction and The Lawrence Group won first place for Best Green Construction of a Home. “St. Louis is blessed with outstanding talent in both architecture and design,” says Christy Marshall, editor-in-chief of AT HOME. “We are thrilled to be able to both showcase—and reward—their outstanding work. And the competition gave us the opportunity to get a national review of local projects. What made AT HOME’s Architect and Design Awards unique is we were able to line up a judge’s panel that included the editors-in-chief of Dwell and House Beautiful, as well as nationally known architects, professors and designers. I think that is also the reason we received so many entries. As word of our awards spreads, I suspect we will receive many more in 2009.” The first, second and third place winners of each category are named in the November/December issue of AT HOME, which was unveiled at the awards reception. The issue also features a project description and photographs of all the first place award-winning work. In addition, the work of the first place winners in each category will also be on display at Plaza Frontenac (second floor atrium) from October 24 – November 7. A small meet and greet reception will take place there on Thursday, October 30 from 5:30 – 7:30pm. The public is invited to meet the winners and discuss their award-winning work. AT HOME received over 115 entries for the contest. The judges panel of the 2008 AT HOME Architect and Design Award competition consisted of the following national judges: Rob Corser, a professor of architecture, formerly at the University of Kansas, now at the University of Washington; Stephen Drucker, the editor-in-chief of House Beautiful magazine; Sam Grawe, the editor-in-chief of DWELL magazine; Kimo Griggs, a professor of architecture at Yale University and the University of Washington; Thomas MontAlto, architect and creator of highmodernhomes.com; Carolyne Roehm, author, designer and proprietor of carolynroehm.com, and Rocio Romero, architectural designer and creator of the LV Home. The competition is open to all local design, architect and landscape firms. The competition is open to both firms and individuals who have completed work in Missouri, but it is also open to entries of work completed elsewhere.
