ST. LOUIS, MO – July 31, 2008 – St. Louis Magazine has hired Jarrett Medlin and Malcolm Gay to join its editorial staff. Medlin is the magazine’s new full-time senior editor and Gay is an editor-at-large, a new position for the publication. Before coming to St. Louis, Medlin served as editor-in-chief of Wichita Magazine in Wichita, Kan. While there, he helped the city magazine double its paid readership and expand its scope with in-depth service packages and compelling profiles. Medlin also served as a contributing editor for 417 Magazine, an award-winning city and regional publication based in Springfield, Mo. Before that time, he covered everything from Hurricane Katrina to NASCAR driver Carl Edwards while serving as field editor for Rural Missouri, a statewide monthly magazine serving more than 500,000 readers. Medlin also spent a summer working for Parenting Magazine in New York City. Medlin holds master's and bachelor's degrees in journalism from the Missouri School of Journalism at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He resides in the Central West End. A graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, Graduate School of Journalism, Malcolm Gay moved to St. Louis in 2003, where he took a job as a staff writer at the Riverfront Times. His work regularly appears in The New York Times, and he is a contributor to National Public Radio San Francisco affiliate KQED’s “You Decide” Web feature. His work has also appeared in Wired magazine, the International Herald Tribune, and the San Francisco Chronicle, among others. In 2003, the Society of Professional Journalists, Northern California Chapter, honored him as that year’s “Outstanding Emerging Journalist,” and in 2005 he received both a James Beard Award and placed as a finalist for the Bert Greene Award from the International Association of Culinary Professionals. More recently, he received top honors from the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies in 2008 for an article he wrote on mystery novelist Qiu Xiaolong. He lives with his girlfriend in the city’s Benton Park Neighborhood. “This is an exciting step for St. Louis Magazine,” says editor-in-chief Stephen Schenkenberg. “Jarrett and Malcolm offer so much — in-depth reporting and writing chops; a deep understanding of St. Louis; even a proven understanding of the role of city magazines. I know our readers will enjoy their contributions.” St. Louis Magazine is the smart, stylish and sophisticated guide to St. Louis. Each month, our award-winning magazine brings you revealing profiles, discerning dining and cultural guides, in depth-features, informed commentary and authoritative best-of lists. 2008 marks St. Louis Magazine’s 14th year of publication.
