Saint Louis, MO, March 12, 2009 — St. Louis Magazine will debut a stunning cover-to-cover redesign with the April 2009 issue hitting newsstands March 31. This is St. Louis Magazine’s first redesign in more than half a decade.
“We’re incredibly excited to introduce the new SLM to our subscribers, our newsstand buyers, and indeed all of St. Louis,” says editor-in-chief Stephen Schenkenberg. “Our goal during the past half-year has been to remake and refine the magazine’s structure so that each issue can be more informative, more beautiful, and more fun. We can’t wait for these new issues to get into the hands of our readers.”
The redesign effort, led by Art Director Kevin Goodbar and Editor-in-Chief Stephen Schenkenberg, represents over six months of work by the magazine’s staff. It includes a complete artistic restructuring of the magazine. Features of the redesign include a new family of fonts, a new logo, and a new sense of visual unity throughout the magazine, in addition to the restructuring of several departments. “This was an exciting opportunity to make the magazine even more readable and delightful for our readers. I used typography that was fresh, yet had a classic sensibility, and had increased legibility, particularly in the listings in the back of the magazine,” explains Goodbar. “We ended up with a design that is cleaner, more modern, and more uniquely St. Louis.”
“We’re thrilled for this opportunity to unveil a beautifully redesigned publication. Improving on an already-excellent product of St. Louis Magazine’s caliber involved a lot of hard work and thoughtful decision-making from cover to cover,” says Publisher Leslie Tunney. “The magazine’s fresh, lively new look demonstrates our commitment to both readers and our clients, who can now enjoy St. Louis Magazine more than ever.”
The magazine pages will feature a new-and-improved editorial approach, complete with cleaner page layouts and clear and modern fonts. The highlights of this historic redesign include:
• A new logo and identity
• New fonts that are more clear, modern, and reader-friendly
• A two-page Table of Contents that promises a clearer overview of each issue
• A new department added to the front of book, Behind the Scenes, which explores the making of the issue
• Name changes and restructuring to two key departments: Dining Out has now become Food & Drink and Culture has been renamed Culture & Events
• A complete re-build of Current and the addition of its new closing page, Agenda, which features our editors’ picks for the top five things to do that month.
The redesigned April issue will be revealed at an invitation-only pre-publication event set for March 18 at BRAVO! Cucina Italiana.
