Over 51,000 people participated in the Susan G. Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure on Saturday, June 23. Walkers and runners alike joined forces Downtown to honor those who have been touched by breast cancer and raise funds for breast healthcare. 700 teams took part in Saturday’s race.
The timed 5K began at 8:35 a.m., followed by the untimed runners and walkers. An awards ceremony succeeded the activities.
“We raised over $2.4 million on Saturday,” said Helen Chesnut, Executive Director of Komen St. Louis. “Ever dollar raised goes to support the local fight against breast cancer.”
Seventy-five percent of the money raised on Saturday will be used to fund treatment, education, support and screening for breast health. “A majority of that money goes towards breast cancer screening, which is our number one priority,” Chesnut explained. The residual twenty-five percent is put toward innovative research at the national level.
This year’s honorary chair for Race for the Cure was Sam Bradford, quarterback for the St. Louis Rams. “(Bradford) brought his mom and dad, so it was truly a family occasion. When he looked out over the sea of pink, he was very surprised how large the event was.”
