Eckert’s Country Store & Farms
Apple of Their Eye: Jonagold
Why: Jonagold apples are best eaten just after picking. Manager Chris Eckert describes this big apple, a cousin to the Jonathan, as a crowd-pleaser. Pick your own at the Belleville and Millstadt locations; they’re also sold at all Eckert’s stores.
Apple of Their Eye: Blushing Gold
Why: A good-looking golden apple blushed with broad pink patches, this cross between the Jonathan and Golden Delicious has a thin, fine skin. It tastes sweetly tart and has a crisp crunch. “Blushing Gold is an amazing keeper you can store all winter in the refrigerator, with minimal change in texture and taste,” says co-owner Susie Thierbach.
Apple of Their Eye: Arkansas Black
Why: Known for its darkly red skin, sprightly sweet taste, and firm flesh, the Arkansas Black apple isn’t ready to eat just after being picked. It needs a week’s rest before really dazzling you. Put the dusky beauty on the must-try list for autumn. It’s available at Centennial in late fall.
Apple of Their Eye: Winesap
Why: This American beauty red apple is prized for its winelike taste and tang. It’s a fall favorite. “Customers are adamant about Winesaps,” says Sherry Mills Chase of Mills Apple Farm. “They practically break down our doors.” Be patient, though; Winesaps should be stored for 30 days to develop maximum flavor.
