Opening day at Craft Beer Cellar.
There are those summer afternoons (or mornings) where you have a desperate craving for booze, but you find a cocktail, a beer or wine just doesn’t cut it; you need something more.
Look no further than the radler—translating to “cyclist” in German—a beer brewed with a fruit soda, making it a smooth, refreshing alternative to strong drinks, heavy beers or sugary wines. The most popular lately on the market has been Austria’s Stiegl Radler, which is 60% grapefruit soda and 40% Goldbräu (a light golden style of beer). And not only is it undeniably crisp and delicious, at 2.5% alcohol by volume, they go down a little too easily. [Writer’s note: If you want something a little stiffer, try using the radler as you would tonic or club soda when mixing drinks.]
“We call the Stiegl Radler our ‘breakfast’ beer because it’s pretty much a ‘beer-mosa,’” says Hoperations Manager Brandon Nickelson of Craft Beer Cellar in Clayton. “It’s perfect for summertime.”
Nickelson also notes the similarly styled Schöfferhofer Grapefruit Hefeweizen as a popular choice among customers. It’s described as having a hint of clove and slight citrus notes with a hoppy finish.
Nickelson thinks this fad “is a summertime thing only” before the heavier beers come back in season, but, please—prove him wrong and go stock up like thirsty chipmunks preparing for winter.
