INSIDER TIPS
Ramen 001
With 2016 quickly establishing itself as The Year of Ramen (both nationwide and in St. Louis), it’s the perfect time to bone up on the basics. For starters, the dish is not centuries-old, as many assume, but invented in Asia in the early 20th century. There are four different styles of ramen broth, the most popular being the pork bone-based tonkotsu (right), not to be confused with tonkatsu, which is a deep-fried pork cutlet.

(Not So) Fast Food
Fast food used to be served fast because the menus were small and streamlined. Nowadays, with entire walls devoted to depicting the myriad old, new, and improved items, service times have slowed, doubling in some cases. It’s forced us to rename the genre “not-really-that-fast-anymore food.”
HOT SPOT
Sliding Into Baseball Season
The patio at The Slider House is the new go-to place for watching Cardinals games, even more so with the advent of The Ballpark Special (below), a beef slider on a salted pretzel bun with beer cheese, house chips, jalapeños, and a pickle skewer. But don’t look for it on the menu; it’s only available during Cardinal games. The price is $7, but that includes a 16-ounce can of Bud, Bud Light, or Bud Select, served in a Slider House koozie. 9428 Manchester, 314- 962-9445.
