The UN Refugee Agency estimates 1.7 million Ukrainians have fled the country for safety in the fastest-growing refugee crisis since World War II. Now, a number of St. Louis restaurants and bars are stepping up to help Ukrainians in need by donating a portion of their sales to various humanitarian organizations.
Over the weekend, restaurants indo and The Lucky Accomplice donated proceeds to chef Jose Andres’ World Central Kitchen, a humanitarian organization that feeds people during most humanitarian crises and is currently supplying meals to Ukrainian refugees crossing into Poland.
Tomorrow, March 8, during International Women’s Day, a few other local spots will donate to the cause, including:
Katie’s Pizza & Pasta (9568 Manchester): Adding another Tuesday date to its monthly Giveback Tuesday donation day, Katie’s will donate proceeds for the day to World Central Kitchen. Restaurant co-owner Ted Collier is Ukrainian-American; his late mother, Nadia, was born in Kyiv, and became a political refugee when she was just four years old. Collier still has family in Ukraine. “The war is close to our hearts,” the restaurant noted in a recent newsletter. (Supplemental note: Ted Collier matched the amount of money raised on March 8, bringing the final donation to $17,000.)
1220 Artisan Spirits and 4 Hands Brewing Co. (1220 S. 8th): The brewery and distillery will donate 100 percent of brewery and tasting room sales tomorrow to Razom for Ukraine, a nonprofit providing emergency response support in Ukraine. From noon–10 p.m. Tuesday, guests can stop by to support the cause.
Winslow's Table (7213 Delmar): Through Sunday, March 20, in partnership with other University City restaurants, the restaurant be donating 10% of this week's sales to the World Central Kitchen.
KNEAD Bake House (3467 Hampton) On March 11 and 12, proceeds from the bakery's sales and donations will be donated to the World Central Kitchen's efforts in Ukraine (or donate directly here).
Yolklore (Watson): On the weekend of March 12 and 13, Yolklore will be donating all profits (including from the just-introduced Yolklore Slinger) directly to Ukrainian refugees.
The Lucky Accomplice (2501 S Jefferson): The Lucky Accomplice is extending their giveback from last weekend to this weekend, donating a portion of all sales from Wednesday, March 9 to Sunday, March 13 to humanitarian support efforts in Ukraine. Organizations include World Central Kitchen and The International Rescue Committee, which provides food, medical care, and emergency support services to refugee families in Ukraine. The Lucky Accomplice will also accept direct donations during service. To make a reservation, click here. Walk-ins are also welcome.
Fountain on Locust (3027 Locust): Through April 15th, 50% of the proceeds from every "That Drink We Made For Ukraine" cocktail (Don Q Rum, Blue Curacao, pineapple juice, Missouri-based 360 Vodka) sold will go to support World Central Kitchen.
Mission Taco Joint (multiple locations): All seven locations in St. Louis and Kansas City will donate a portion of taco sales from Tuesday to the Urgent Action Fund for Women’s Human Rights in Ukraine. The special Taco Tuesday sales will support women, trans, and nonbinary activists on the ground in and surrounding Ukraine by providing flexible funding and security support.
Brennan’s (316 N. Euclid): On Tuesday, Brennan’s will donate 25 percent of sales to World Central Kitchen. The bar invites St. Louisans to show up for some food and drink in solidarity with the people of Ukraine, with a portion of sales going toward feeding Ukrainian refugees.
avenue (12 N. Meramec): Bryan and Diane Carr's Clayton restaurant is selling flowers, with proceeds going to Unicef to help the children of Ukraine (to donate directly, click here). Patrons simply make a donation in any amount they choose ($20 is suggested) and take home a sunflower (the national flower of Ukraine). "After our events manager, Vicky Tana, and I had returned from the wholesaler with the sunflowers, we were all talking about how we could help the people of Ukraine. Michael, our bartender, came up with the idea and we ran with it," said Diane Carr.
