Nothing impresses dessert lovers more than that eye-popping first wedge cut from The Blue Owl’s Caramel Pecan Levee High Apple Pie, chosen as one of “Oprah’s Favorite Things” by O Magazine in 2011—unless it’s the first slice from an almost-as-famous eight-layer dobash cake—a mile-high masterpiece invented in 1884 by Jozsef Dobos, one of Hungary’s most famous chefs and pâtissiers. We had a hard time choosing between the lemon and chocolate amaretto varieties, but then the festive chocolate pumpkin dobash (made with pumpkin mousse) won out.
