The Dish: Chocolate Melt at The Preston
This dessert is all about the presentation.

One of this season’s worst-kept culinary secrets is the short-but-sweet dessert menu at The Preston at The Chase Park Plaza: just four offerings, at $9 apiece. There’s executive pastry chef David Laufer’s take on a campfire s’more: a chocolate panna cotta with Ferrero Rocher gelato and smoked/candied hazelnuts served in a smoke-filled Mason jar. But the no-more-calls-please-we-have-a-winner stunner is the aptly named Chocolate Melt. Laufer’s riff on the PB&J includes a scattering of peanut brittle, fresh raspberries, and a cocoa streusel crunch cookie, plus a scoop of salted peanut gelato hidden inside a chocolate dome that slowly and magically melts away when hot caramel sauce is poured over it. It’s official: A meal at The Preston now qualifies as “dinner and a show.”
