We all remember the ice cream sandwich of our youth. For some, it was a slab of average-quality vanilla ice cream placed between two chocolate-flavored wafers that eventually and inevitably ended up sticking to one’s fingertips. Others recall the Chipwich, which advanced the cause with an improved cookie component. More and better ice creams and cookies followed, which leads us to the celebrated iteration served at The Baked Bear, a chain of ice creameries dedicated to the confection. Select a fresh-made cookie, brownie, or doughnut (or a combo); pair it with one of a dozen flavors of premium ice cream; and top with any of a dozen accoutrements. Indulge in a double- or even triple-decker—there are no rules. (In this case, we went with the red velvet cookie, mint chip, chocolate chip cookie, Toasted S’Mores, and brownie.) The option of warming the creation in a hot press (and the resulting hot/cold, soft/crunchy bites) should be standard procedure. Finger-licking is compulsory. Napkins are a necessity. Satisfaction is guaranteed. 6140 Delmar.
