In lieu of the much-loved Cinco de Mayo festival on Cherokee Street—which has been postponed for the second year in a row due to the pandemic—the area’s community improvement district has organized a number of events this month that will allow you to enjoy fun, food, and festivities in a safer way.

Among those events is Taco de Oro: The Cherokee Street Taco Bracket. Each of the street’s participating taquerias has chosen what they think is the best taco on their menu. Beginning May 1, you can support Cherokee Street restaurants by ordering and voting for your favorite competing taco. A QR code will be provided to allow you to cast your vote.
As patrons cast their votes throughout the month, the tastiest tacos will advance through the bracket, and one will win the prized Golden Taco Trophy. In addition to sampling all of the delicious tacos, there’s more for you to win as well. The first 100 taco lovers who participate will receive a coupon for one free margarita at participating Cherokee Street bars and restaurants.
The bracket begins with an elite eight tacos across four categories:
- The Best of Al Pastor: Al pastor tacos from La Vallesana v. Don Carlos restaurant
- The Steak Out: Carne asada tacos from Taqueria Hectorito at El Torito v. Taqueria El Bronco
- Tacos From Around The World: A sweet and spicy chicken taco from Kalbi Taco Shack v. a Honduran chicken taco from Sueño Latino
- Wild Card: Squash flower taco from La Manganita v. beef barbacoa and mozzarella taco from Taco & Ice Cream Joint.
Round 1 ends May 14, round 2 ends on May 21, and the final round ends May 28, when the winner will be announced.
