Chicken nachos at Si Sabor
Found: Tasty tacos and more. But just one day a week – usually Saturdays, but occasionally postponed until Sunday (as it will be March 11 and 12) because of professional commitments, and located in a convenience store that likes to showcase local products.
Corrye Lopez (behind counter at right) serves her good stuff in a corner of In & Out Market at 1133 Bellevue Ave., behind St. Mary’s Hospital. A sign at the curb signals that she’s in residence. Not much room to sit, with a counter seating eight or so in the window. Lots of regular customers, lots of to-go orders.
Here’s the drill: Wait in line. Give your order and your name. Cash payment is accepted at her counter, credit cards and beverages beyond fountain sodas are settled up at the store’s cash register. When your name is called, they’re preparing your order, so step up and customize it as you will. Leave happy.
What’s to eat? Street tacos, soft and generously filled. Nachos. Tostadas. Larger tacos on homemade naan. Always a wide choice of fillings, including vegetable options. And the customizing options? Pico de gallo with avocado, cilantro, white onions, red onions in lime juice (they rock), red and green salsas, harissa (yes, you read that right), and sour cream.
My faves were the steak tacos (at right), kind of like carnitas but beef, a tostada with “dirty pig”, which had some pineapple in it, almost an al pastor, and an order of chicken nachos. The spicy pink cheese sauce on the nachos set them apart. The leftover nachos, chicken and toppings made a swell batch of migas, a sort of riff on scrambled eggs, the next day. I’d order them again just for that.
The hours at Si Sabor are from 12 p.m. - 3 p.m. on Saturdays (usually). In & Out Market is located at 1133 Bellevue Ave. in Richmond Heights. 314-647-2696
